Description of the Prop 28 Arts Programs Funded:
These programs are designed to enrich the academic experience and provide students with diverse opportunities to explore their artistic talents and interests. We are enhancing arts and music education by offering after-school classes and opportunities for students. Baile Folklorico, specifically, is offered at 2 middle schools and 1 high school site, but other dance classes are happening throughout the district.
Salinas High School can now offer after-school ceramics classes, which not all students can access during the regular school day due to schedule conflicts. Also at Salinas High School, students have theater after school where they learn how to work on costumes, build sets for plays, and attend local theater shows.
Schools that do not have an after-school class offering have purchased materials, supplies, and equipment needed to prepare themselves to do so in the near future. Also with Prop 28 funds, all schools are taking advantage of sending their teachers to additional art-related conferences and trainings. Working with outside organizations also includes bringing them to the students, like Alisal High School, who work with organizations like Artist Ink and Mariachi groups. Artist Ink's goal is to empower our youth through the use of the arts, by equipping them with the professional knowledge needed to pursue the arts as a career and value themselves as the unique and dynamic individuals they are.
The district's community relationships also provide opportunities for students to perform at local events like Poetry Slam, Student Film Festival, and Honor Choir and Band Concert. We are also investing in new instruments and technology, such as upgraded musical instruments and access to digital music and licenses.
Our district is broadening its visual arts curriculum to include more diverse artistic disciplines and techniques. Mount Toro High School, for example, offered after-school classes in digital art, graphic design, and mixed media. These programs are designed not only to build technical skills but also to promote critical thinking, cultural appreciation, and personal growth. By integrating these arts into our educational framework, we aim to create a well-rounded learning experience that enriches students' lives and prepares them for future creative endeavors. Through collaboration with local arts organizations and community partners, SUHSD is committed to providing a supportive environment where every student can explore their artistic passion.
