ATHLETIC COMPETITION UPDATE 1-25-21

The SUHSD Board of Trustees are committed to maintaining the health and wellbeing of our students, staff and community partners  The Board has been informed of the mandates, recommendations and ever-changing guidance that comes from the State and local health officials in regards to providing schooling for our children.  This includes the Board using available guidance for making decisions of when and how to re-engage our students through in-person small cohorts as well as returning to education-based athletics.

The SUHSD Board understands the growing frustrations over Stay at Home Orders and the restrictions imposed, including those restricting youth sports.  At the same time, we have seen COVID-19 transmission rates rise significantly and thus, the priority of school districts has been to do our part in limiting the spread of the virus.  As COVID19 metrics begin to reduce to lower levels and State orders lift, we look forward to offering small cohorts of in-person learning for students that lack resources to be fully engaged in distance learning.  We also look to restart the process of returning to athletic conditioning using the previous protocols for ensuring student and staff safety.

Keep in mind, the State athletic governing body, (CIF), has set out new guidance for athletic competition with State and County virus rates used for determining when it may be possible to return to educational based athletic competition.  According to the guidance from the CIF, there are two seasons for athletic competition with sports separated as follows:

  • CIF Season 1 Sports (January - April): Traditional Competitive Cheer, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Gymnastics, Girls Volleyball, Water Polo
  • CIF Season 2 Sports (March - June): Baseball, Basketball, Competitive Sport Cheer, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Track & Field, Boys Volleyball, Wrestling

These two seasons may only be offered when State and County Health Officials reduce restrictions as well as when local school Districts deem it safe to return.  Of note, the CIF has matched sports with the County Color Tiers based on the type of sport and the amount of close contact.  Therefore, a sport in the CIF Season 1 may only be offered when it falls in the County Color Tier.  Below is a description of what may be offered based on the Color Tier:

Local Athletic Leagues – As reported in the local news, the Pacific Coast Athletic League has cancelled all league schedules for the remainder of the year.  All of our schools participate in various divisions of this league structure.  This decision did not come easy and was partly due to the State Color Tier system that could result in neighboring counties being in different Tiers and unable to provide competition in sports between counties.  However, our athletic directors continue to work towards a potential scheduling of athletic competition, within the County, or at least within the City once authorized to do so.

Again, the SUHSD Board understands that the postponement of educational athletics due to the COVID19 has been difficult and we are looking forward to offering in-person schooling, athletic conditioning and athletic completion, when it is safe for all involved.

Thank you and be well.

Dan Burns, Superintendent
