Soapbox Student Speakers Shine
Our district hosted The Salinas Soapbox Speech Showcase event on March 22, 2023, at La Paz Middle School, which featured La Paz Middle School and Alisal High School student speakers!
This event invited students to amplify their voices through “soapbox speeches” and speak out on the issues that matter most to them while inspiring each other to take action. Student participants spoke on a wide variety of topics, such as race and gender equality, pedestrian safety in school zones, inclusivity with the self-identity choices of students, and the rights of Salinas fieldworkers.
Our student speakers got to hear feedback from our esteemed panel of “Youth Voice Champions”, consisting of Diego Raya and Genisis Mojica from Salinas Youth Voice, and City of Salinas Community Relations Manager Sophia Rome.
“The issues that the council is voting for now is for your Salinas,” said Sophia Rome. “We can keep thinking about government in the same comfortable box, but your generation is pushing us to move forward. Continue to use your voice and stand up for and speak for what you believe in. Inspire yourself and inspire others!”
We are so proud of our students, who hopped on the Soapbox, using compelling facts, data, and raw emotion to support their passions and advocacy. High School speakers will be earning their CA State Seal of Civic Engagement upon their upcoming graduations, while Middle School speakers will be on their way to earning the seal in High School.
Student speaker Melissa Zavala of Alisal High School was chosen to attend the National Mikva Soapbox Speech showcase hosted in Washington, DC. in May. Congratulations, Melissa!
We thank Mikva Challenge for collaborating with our district to bring this Soapbox Mainstage event to La Paz and Alisal students. Mikva Challenge develops youth to be empowered, informed, and active citizens who will promote a just and equitable society.
