Critical Issues Forum

Our first-time SUHSD students presented on the topic of "Building Empathy through Cultural Education." Our students' message, urging the importance of cross-cultural understanding was felt by participants and staff at CIF, as their message was referenced and reiterated several times throughout the conference. Our students were able to begin their own cultural education and the building of empathy through action - networking and beginning international friendships in the memorable few days. Seniors Antonio & Alexia Magdaleno (NSHS) were excellent representatives of Salinas, sharing their culture with the international students with delicious Mexican treats.

Daniel Regalado-Ortiz (AHS), selected as a United States representative in a separate panel of international students during the event, stressed his desire for fellow high school students at the local level to take initiative and become more aware of global issues that need to be addressed. We Japanese teachers are very excited to see where our future SUHSD-raised student leaders will next make their big impact! Our school was recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and also by the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey with an Award of Excellence!

Our students and district were highlighted in today's edition of the Monterey Herald: https://www.montereyherald.com/2019/04/01/monterey-county-students-participate-in-annual-critical-issues-forum/. The event was also covered on KSBW news on Saturday.
