SALINAS, Calif. — August 21, 2026 — California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond brought his Welcome Back to School Tour to Salinas High School Friday morning, meeting with students and educators and sharing a message about the power of education to break barriers and create pathways for the future.

Students, administrators, educators, District leaders, and members of the Board of Trustees gathered to welcome Superintendent Thurmond to the Cowboy community before joining him for classroom visits across campus.

During his remarks, Thurmond encouraged students to stay engaged in their education, believe in their potential, and take advantage of the opportunities available to them. He emphasized that education can open doors, expand possibilities, and help shape what comes next.

“We are grateful to Superintendent Thurmond for making Salinas High School part of his Welcome Back to School Tour and for taking the time to connect directly with our students and educators,” said SUHSD Superintendent Dr. Zandra Jo Galván. “Opportunities like this remind our students that their voices matter, their education matters, and that the work they are doing today can open doors to what comes next.”

The visit continued in Mr. Causey’s biology class, where Thurmond spoke with freshmen about what they are learning, their first weeks of high school, and their goals for the years ahead. Students shared their work and optimism for the future.

The morning also included a special recognition of Thurmond’s birthday, with the District and Salinas High School community presenting a small gift during the welcome.

The Salinas Union High School District extends its appreciation to Principal Dr. Margarita Contreras, the Salinas High School administrative team, students, educators, and team members who helped create a memorable and welcoming experience.

Thurmond’s stop in Salinas offered students a chance to connect directly with California’s top education leader while highlighting the learning, leadership, and school community at Salinas High School.
