AVID ~ Advancement Via Individual Determination

  • AVID - (Advancement Via Individual Determination)

AVID is an elective support class offered to students who would like to prepare for four-year universities.  The curriculum features SUPPORT in writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading, note taking, grade monitoring, and college/career/motivational activities.  The AVID class is an elective.  College students are in the classroom as tutors twice a week and a field trip is taken to a university once a year.  Students must commit to taking notes in subject-area classes on a daily basis.  Other requirements for applicants include satisfactory citizenship, teacher recommendations, good attendance, and a GPA between 2.0 and 3.5.  Because spots are limited, students may need to come in for an interview at WMS.

AVID Mission Statement: AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society

WMS AVID Mission Statement: All WMS AVID students will show competence in academic standards, will be prepared for high school, and prepare them to be life-long learners as productive members of their community. WMS AVID students will be exposed to colleges, college requirements, college life, career options, career exploration, and more. The WMS AVID program will collaborate with community members, SUHSD alumni, and more to bring real life experience into the classroom to talk with AVID students about their life experience.
