SUHSD Parents, Guardians, and Staff:
The Monterey County Sheriff and emergency service agencies in the area have notified the community that they predict that the Salinas River will overflow and cause flooding of the main access roads between the Monterey Peninsula and Salinas. Specifically, they indicated the river will flood Highway 68 near the River Road crossing, Blanco Road where the river intersects at the bridge, and possibly Hwy 1 where the river empties into the ocean near Marina. They anticipate this to begin at 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 12 but that could happen earlier or later in the day depending on how fast the river rises.
Although our schools have been open this week and our staff has done an excellent job in serving and supporting our students, the conditions stated above will result in a large percentage of our staff unable to travel to and from work. That will leave the district unable to ensure adequate supervision of our students. Additionally, we have a large number of students that will not be able to get to school.
Therefore, the SUHSD will cancel all classes and extracurricular activities on Thursday, January 12. We will evaluate the situation during the day and notify the community of any decision for classes on Friday.
Although classes are canceled for January 12, District and school site offices will remain open for business. Please follow these district guidelines for work on January 12:
All instructional staff including certificated counselors- may work remotely on grading, lesson planning, and reviewing student progress. This work includes reviewing student IEP’s, assessments and work related to your job description. If you prefer to work from campus you are welcome to come to use your normal classroom or office space.
All other employee groups that are affected by the evacuation orders and those living on the Peninsula side of the Salinas River, please work from home if you are able.
All other employees are to report to your regular work location and the regular work hours. If you have extenuating circumstances please communicate with your immediate supervisor.
Thank you and be well.
