Proposition 28
Proposition 28: Arts and Music in Schools Funding
Salinas Union High School District
Allocation Year: 2024-25, 2023-24
1. Narrative description of the Prop 28 arts education program(s) funded.
Prop 28 funds enabled the district to expand equitable, standards-aligned arts education across middle and high schools. We increased access during and after school and removed cost barriers for supplies, equipment, and experiences. Students engaged in music, theater, visual arts, dance, and digital media. Baile folklorico operates at two middle schools and one high school, with additional dance options districtwide. Music programs added upgraded instruments and digital tools. Visual arts expanded through ceramics, graphic design, digital art, mixed media, and campus murals. For example, Salinas High offers after-school ceramics and theater where students design costumes, build sets, and attend local productions. Community partnerships brought artists to students, including Artist Ink and mariachi ensembles that mentor youth and model arts careers. Students perform and exhibit at district and community events such as the Honor Choir and Band concerts. Field trips, with transportation and entry fees covered, connected classroom learning to professional arts. Artists and contractors provided real-world guidance on murals and productions. Prop 28 supported teacher learning through conferences and targeted training that strengthen curriculum and assessment. Districtwide, these investments increased participation, improved learning environments, and nurtured creativity and cultural pride. We will maintain our equipment, continue to offer after-school access, and sustain partnerships so that every student can explore and grow through the arts.

Description of the Prop 28 Arts Programs Funded:
These programs are designed to enrich the academic experience and provide students with diverse opportunities to explore their artistic talents and interests. We are enhancing arts and music education by offering after-school classes and opportunities for students. Baile Folklorico, specifically, is offered at 2 middle schools and 1 high school site, but other dance classes are happening throughout the district.
Salinas High School can now offer after-school ceramics classes, which not all students can access during the regular school day due to schedule conflicts. Also at Salinas High School, students have theater after school where they learn how to work on costumes, build sets for plays, and attend local theater shows.
Schools that do not have an after-school class offering have purchased materials, supplies, and equipment needed to prepare themselves to do so in the near future. Also with Prop 28 funds, all schools are taking advantage of sending their teachers to additional art-related conferences and trainings. Working with outside organizations also includes bringing them to the students, like Alisal High School, who work with organizations like Artist Ink and Mariachi groups. Artist Ink's goal is to empower our youth through the use of the arts, by equipping them with the professional knowledge needed to pursue the arts as a career and value themselves as the unique and dynamic individuals they are.
The district's community relationships also provide opportunities for students to perform at local events like Poetry Slam, Student Film Festival, and Honor Choir and Band Concert. We are also investing in new instruments and technology, such as upgraded musical instruments and access to digital music and licenses.
Our district is broadening its visual arts curriculum to include more diverse artistic disciplines and techniques. Mount Toro High School, for example, offered after-school classes in digital art, graphic design, and mixed media. These programs are designed not only to build technical skills but also to promote critical thinking, cultural appreciation, and personal growth. By integrating these arts into our educational framework, we aim to create a well-rounded learning experience that enriches students' lives and prepares them for future creative endeavors. Through collaboration with local arts organizations and community partners, SUHSD is committed to providing a supportive environment where every student can explore their artistic passion.
