Mitchell A. Huerta was elected to the Salinas Union High School District Board of Trustees in November 2024 after first being appointed to the Board earlier that year. Representing Trustee Area Two, he brings decades of experience in education, journalism, and community service to his role.

A first-generation college graduate, Trustee Huerta believes deeply in the power of education to transform lives and create opportunities for future generations. He spent 26 years as a social science teacher at San Benito High School, where he also served as president of the teachers' association, coached boys' and girls' tennis, and advised the school's Key Club. His years in the classroom provided him with firsthand insight into the needs of students, educators, and families.

Before entering education, Trustee Huerta built a successful career in journalism, working as a newspaper reporter and sportswriter for publications including the Salinas Californian, the Fresno Bee, and the Reno Gazette-Journal. He has also remained actively involved in the community through organizations such as the Kiwanis Club of Literacy in Salinas, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and local school bond and oversight committees.

Outside of his Board service, Mitchell enjoys staying active and embracing new adventures. He has completed a marathon, bicycled more than 4,000 miles across the United States, and traveled to China as a member of the first United States Goodwill Frisbee Team. He also continues to volunteer as a guide at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, sharing his passion for learning and the natural world with visitors from around the globe.
