AVID ~ Advancement Via Individual Determination

  • AVID: (Advancement Via Individual Determination) The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program is a motivational and academic program with two major components: Student skills for lifelong learning and academic instruction. Students maintain an AVID notebook, learn and practice time management strategies, communication skills, and personal organization and planning. The AVID curriculum focuses on the development of students' writing abilities so that they will be successful in completing college preparatory courses.

AVID is a nationally recognized program that prepares students, who are academically in the middle, for four-year college eligibility.

The mission of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination and AVID has been a part of Alisal since 1998.  Currently, Alisal offers twelve elective classes specifically designed to support students in meeting the challenges of high school as well as creating a college-going culture. Students at Alisal take the AVID elective for four years and are expected to enroll in AP courses. AVID students pass the CAHSEE at over 90% on the first administration of the exam during their tenth-grade year.  The Alisal AVID student also completes the A-G requirements and is accepted to UC and CSU schools at rates higher than the state average.
